Which routes can take goods

Goods in Car is offered on many routes, wherever the carrier for that route accepts goods. When it is available, your quote shows it as a separate Goods in Car option. If your quote has no Goods in Car option, goods cannot travel on that route.

Without a Goods in Car option, our standard terms and conditions apply: personal effects are not accepted (clause 8.1), so the car must travel empty.

Goods going into Western Australia or Tasmania also need a quarantine declaration.

How to pack the car

Carriers use one of two sets of rules, with an 80 kg or an 85 kg limit. Your quote shows which set applies to your carrier.

Carriers with an 80 kg limit

  • Maximum total weight: 80 kg.
  • Goods must be securely packed in cartons, bags or suitcases.
  • Do not load valuables.
  • Goods may only be placed in the boot of a sedan or the cargo area of a hatchback, station wagon or SUV.
  • Goods must not be loaded above the bottom edge of the windows, and all windows must stay clear at all times.
  • Goods may only be carried in the tray of a ute with a lockable hard cover.

Carriers with an 85 kg limit

  • Maximum total weight: 85 kg.
  • Goods must be securely packed.
  • Do not load valuables.
  • Goods must not be loaded above the bottom edge of the windows, and all windows must stay clear.
  • Nothing may be placed on the front seats or on the floor behind the driver’s seat, and the driver’s seat must keep its full range of movement.
  • Goods may only be carried in the tray of a ute with a lockable hard cover.

What it costs

Goods in Car is priced as its own option in your quote, next to the same move without goods, so you can see the difference before you book. The price depends on the route and the carrier.

What you cannot send

  • Valuables.
  • Dangerous goods, such as fuel, gas bottles and flammable liquids.
  • Anything above the window line or blocking a window.

Goods travel entirely at your own risk. No liability is accepted for loss of or damage to goods carried inside the vehicle, or for damage the goods cause to the vehicle, and Transit Protection does not cover them.
